Remediation can emphasize a difference rather than erase it, which is pitched as an improvement of the old medium while still attempting to remain true to the original. Remediation can also be more aggressive, attempting to refashion the older medium or media entirely, while still making the presence of the older media and therefore maintaining a sense of multiplicity, or hypermediacy (340).

Overview

Authors Bolter, Jay David, and Richard Grusin used Immediacy, Hypermediacy, and Remediation to convey several ideas about how new technologies remediate the old media and how new media cannot completely get rid of old media as nothing is fully novel in this day and age.

Immediacy

The logic of immediacy is the idea that technology should closely reflect the real world in order to create a sense of presence (316). The desire for immediacy is the desire for an experience without mediation. A demand for immediacy then demands transparency-- an interface that erases itself so that the user can stand "in an immediate relationship to the contents of the medium" (318).

An example of immediacy would be Apple's Facetime, which attempts to erase the mediation of the phone and makes it appear as if you are having a face-to-face conversation.

Facetime views.

Another example would be how one doesn't see the artist and instead, only sees the painting.

Hypermediacy

The viewer is aware of the medium on which they are observing. "The Medium is the Message" The form of medium has an impact of the message itself. Hypermediacy is comprised of a combination of images and sounds and text and video in order to construct multiple representations within a heterogeneous space (328). The logic of hypermediacy requires the user to recognize the medium as a medium and to desire that mediated experience.

An example would be how computer desktops mimicked what would be on an actual desktop (e.g. files & folders)

Remediation

Remediation can emphasize a difference rather than erase it, which is pitched as an improvement of the old medium while still attempting to remain true to the original. Remediation can also be more aggressive, attempting to refashion the older medium or media entirely, while still making the presence of the older media and therefore maintaining a sense of multiplicity, or hypermediacy (340).

Example: Contemporary art is a remix of older pieces as artists draw inspiration and vision from older works from other artists

"the new medium can remediate by trying to absorb the old medium entirely."

- new media oftens tries concealing the the difference between itself and old media

- "immediacy through transparency"
